This is the 6th installment of the Outfit Diaries series and the first one of the New Year, and while it would have been nice to write about all of the great outfits that I wore this past week, I can’t, because that just wasn’t the case.
In the past, this would have made me feel like my wardrobe was all wrong and that I needed to go out and buy a few things to make it feel balanced again.
But now, I’m just realizing that it wasn’t actually the clothes that was the problem (well, not directly anyways), but that it had more to do with simply feeling “uncomfortable”.
In the community chat, Katie shared that:
“Knowing the difference between feeling ugly or uncool and feeling physically uncomfortable has been helpful.”

I can’t tell you how many items of clothing I went through this week just to find something to wear.
And while Katie mentioned the items being physically uncomfortable, I think there’s also an element of feeling uncomfortable because you don’t feel confident in what you’re wearing. For example, when you’re in a rush and you don’t have time to try something else.
I took a few photos of my outfit fails this week as well, which I will be sharing at the end of the newsletter.
Outfit Rating System: Comfort will refer to how comfortable the outfit was on that day. The questions I will be asking myself: was I too hot or cold, did it fit me properly, did I have to adjust any of the items constantly? Style will be based on how I felt while I was wearing the outfit. Did I feel stylish in the outfit, did it feel like a “me” outfit, or was there something about it that was off? Fun will refer to how playful the outfit felt. Did I try something new, was I really excited about the outfit, or was I bored by the outfit?
* I have not added any links to items. Most of the clothes I own are preloved or old and it is never my intent to encourage you to shop, unless it’s your own wardrobe - I STRONGLY encourage that! However, if you see an item that you’d like more information on, leave a comment or send me a message! If there is a link, it’s just fyi, not affiliated.
Sunday
After about a half hour of trying clothes on and not being able to get it right, I was really happy with Sunday’s outfit. I had done a closet declutter the day before and identified some items that I’d like to get more wear out of.
A grey silk slip dress is one of them.
I played around with layering it and finally settled on sandwiching it between my wide leg black pants and a ribbed long sleeve top with ruching and ties. I used the ties to make the front of the top shorter so that more of the dress showed and I like how the strings stand out against the grey of the dress.
I wore my silver sneakers as a nod to all the other silver elements going on in the outfit. And we were going to be walking around so I wanted to test out how comfortable they would be - they were good but I don’t think they are as cushy as my tan suede sneakers!
I’m very much in an earrings phase so I opted to wear a pair of silver ones to complement the silver ends of the top ties. And then I added a chunky lock necklace that was a souvenir from a trip I took back home in 2015.
I felt a little rebellious wearing statement earrings AND a necklace.

Monday
While it seems like this outfit should be fine, and it felt like a “me” outfit, I was not comfortable in it at all. I had put off getting dressed for most of the morning but I had a doctor’s appointment to go to so I ended up being in a rush to get ready.
I love all of these items individually, but together, they felt really uncomfortable. The neckline of the sweater and the vest together were not compatible and it was all I could notice. Also, the sweater is a wool blend and it’s not super soft. I’m not usually sensitive to wool but this day, I think I was just uncomfortable in my own skin and everything was bothering me!
I also didn’t like these particular jeans with this sweater. Both of them together felt unbalanced to me and while I don’t think it came across that way to anyone else, I just really disliked this outfit.
If I had more time, I would have changed into something entirely different, or at least opted for a chunkier boot!

Tuesday
This was my new year’s eve outfit. This was a winner!
We have a tradition with family friends where our two families spend new year’s eve together - we go bowling, then out to eat and end the evening back at their place where we eat snacks and play games while we wait for the ball to drop in Time’s Square.
It’s always a great evening and this year did not disappoint!
Since we’d be bowling and I didn’t want to constrict my amazing bowling form (I kid - I suck at bowling and I know it, which probably makes it more fun), I wore my utility pants that have quite a bit of stretch.
To add a little festive color, I opted for my dark green sweater and for a little holiday sparkle, I chose my silver sneakers - I thought I could get away from renting bowling shoes with them, but that was not the case 😅
I kept the accessories simple with my watch and new earrings that I got for Christmas.
