I've never heard of the Diderot Effect! And gal, I've had my share! I had to restack this as I guess many fall in that Diderot trap without even recognising it. Thanks for educating us!

Haha same - I feel like I've lived most of my life in the Diderot trap! I'm so glad that you enjoyed it, Ewelina, and thank you for restacking it 💕

I've know of the Diderot effect for while, but always good to be reminded, as it's easy to forget. Really appreciate your examples and you suggestions to counteract it. It's definitely something I need to be aware of the moment. I find my style shifting and needing to make new purchases due to my changed body. But the new pieces have to work with what I already have and not needing a new top to wear underneath or if I get those shoes I need a matching belt. Something I REALLY need to remind myself sometimes - if I have to buy something to make it work, then it's a no!

That's a really great reminder, Sigrid!

It’s funny that Diderot started shopping after a new dressing gown. I recently had a similar experience involving a dressing gown. It was the most beautiful dressing gown I’d ever seen in pink silk velvet with a floral lining. There was also matching pjs in the floral and a summer robe in the same fabric. So I bought the dressing gown and decided to get the pjs and then a little later the robe went on sale so yep bought that too.

Dressing gowns are going to get us all 😅

This all sounds so luxurious, Noelene!

That is some dressing gown. I've read about Diderot before but never seen this image, it's great!

I sometimes find myself chasing the high of a "successful" buy. If I find one very nice vintage sweater, I want replicate that feeling. Or maybe one new t-shirt makes me want to replace all my older tees cos they look a bit shabby in contrast.

YES to this, Lin - that feeling of finding the perfect items is so addictive! I didn't even think about it in terms of feeling, but this is such a great example. Thank you for sharing!

Wow, I’ve never heard of the Diderot Effect before, but it makes sense. It must be some hard-wired survival instinct to scavenge or source needs, for it to be so strong in people. And of course, media and advertising play it up. Fascinating!💕

That is a gorgeous dressing gown, I would be tempted to revamp my life for it!

"It must be some hard-wired survival instinct to scavenge or source needs, for it to be so strong in people." - that's a great insight, Sheila!

And I agree - I can't really blame him!

I had not heard of the diderot effect before but I have definately had the effect happen to me. I am hoping now that I can give it a name, I can be mindful of it and avoid falling for its trap. Thank you for the heads up, and impressive job on your behalf at the consignment store.

My life makes sense now.

Also, that painting of Diderot is beautiful and his new dressing gown *was* pretty magical indeed.

Haha, my work here is definitely done!

Right?!? I mean, I guess I can't really blame him - I can see how he'd want his life to match it!

Yes that was my exact thought! Iridescence can do that

Wow. All the yes to it . I always thought of it as either “snowballing” or the domino efffect; but this term sounds more accurate !

I think those terms also describe it well, Rebecca! And it happens so much that we just knew there had to be something psychological behind it.

I’d heard of the Diderot effect before, but your list of examples helped clarify for me how prevalent it is in my purchasing decisions. Upgrade phone —> new phone case is so freaking real 🙈

Right?!? Once I wrote one down, they kept flowing out because I've apparently done it in every aspect of my life 😅

I completely understand the concept but had never known there was a name for it. I thrifted a t-shirt dress this week that may send me spiraling down the Diderot road. It needs *something* but I’m not sure wats yet.

Yeah, I think it’s a pretty commonplace occurrence. It sounds like you’re being mindful by waiting to figure out what it is that you need!
