For anyone who is wondering about one of the other options - I have the Patagonia silent down short coat in black and I love it! I was thinking about it for a couple of years because of the cost and finally bought it 2 or 3 years ago. It’s held up really well, no snagging issues, washes and dries (with dryer balls or tennis balls in dryer to fluff it) easily, isn’t too puffy but is warm and comfy. Have actually been thinking of getting the longer version in a different color since I like this one (and Patagonia’s ethics) so much!

A winter coat is such a good BIFL/BIFTLH candidate. I will say that I have a Frank and Oak parka and it’s such good quality, but I find it too warm to wear unless it’s seriously freezing. Loved reading about your process and spin on the concept!

I’m so happy that the Frank and Oak parka is working out for you! Cold weather is definitely much more enjoyable with a quality coat…I’ve been using mine the past 2 days and I can’t believe how cold it is out because I feel so toasty in the coat.

I love your choice! They were all pretty great, so it's good you had such an extensive checklist. I also feel that for clothes you need to protect you from the weather, it's good to go with a brand from a country that knows its stuff! I don't feel that any of my puffers are perfect, but they are all good in different ways, so although my heaviest one doesn't have a hood, I'll stick with the ones I have. I love the idea of BIFTLH and will immediately adopt it.

Thanks Louise! I'm pretty excited about it and relieved that I finally went through this process to get, what I hope will be, the perfect winter coat for me. I once heard that "there's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing" (not sure where it originated) and I think this coat will help me to enjoy the outdoors more in the winter. And yes, growing up in northern Canada with extreme winters, I'm pretty happy that it's coming from a Canadian brand!
