Favorite Outfits Lately - Spring
5 Daytime Outfits + 2 Evening Outfits
As I scroll back through outfit photos from the past few months, there are a few that stand out to me as ones that I really enjoyed wearing and would wear again and again.
The following 5 outfits show a progression from cooler spring days to warmer ones. I feel like we’re getting a proper spring this year as it hasn’t gotten too hot yet (we have had periods of hot weather but we’ve had cooler temperatures more often) which I appreciate because I can still layer.
I’ve added some favorite stying tips that I’ve used for each outfit to make it feel a little bit “extra” :)
I’ve also included 2 dressy outfits at the end - 1 that I wore to a family birthday dinner and the second that I wore to a show that I lucked into free tickets for.

Daytime Outfits
Outfit 1
For this outfit, I wanted the coat to be the outfit, so I layered a light t-shirt underneath and buttoned the coat all the way to the neck. Then I added a vintage bolo tie. I left the rest of the coat open so that the t-shirt and jeans were visible, especially when I walked outside.
With the rest of the outfit being neutral, I wore my leopard print shoes, which have definitely been the MVP of my cold weather outfits (winter/early spring). Sadly, at the time of writing this, they have pretty much been retired until next fall (but I’ll be so excited to get them back out again then).
Style tip: make a lightweight coat the top with a bolo tie tightened at the neck.
I also added a vintage turquoise ring as an extra accessory (in addition to the ones that I always wear - watch, wedding ring, school ring).

Outfit 2
Realizing that I hadn’t worn my grey silk dress in a while, I decided to build an outfit around it, similar to what I did here (link to anatomy of an outfit post). I started off my layering it over jeans and I was craving color so I added my cobalt blue cardigan and I left a few buttons open so that it didn’t break the outfit up into 1/3s. Then I added the shinier of my 2 pairs of moto boots (these also have a fun silver arrowhead detail around the boot harness and a square toe which I really love).
I felt like I needed something else to make the outfit more interesting and I remembered this double belt that I’d decluttered a while back with some other accessories but hadn’t actually gotten around to bringing in yet (I usually let decluttered items sit in storage for a little while before I officially take them to consignment/donation, which leads to fewer regrets).
Then I added a chunky necklace to make it even more interesting and a little rocker chic!

Style tip: add necklaces to belts to create a fun waist detail.

Frye Arrowhead Boots

Outfit 3
This outfit is a little more basic as it’s basically just a grey cashmere sweater and a pair of jeans, but to add some personality to it, I added my current favorite scarf (blue/white striped cotton which was a recent travel souvenir).
I also added a matching chocolate brown handbag and ballet flats. I think the concept of matching accessories has been deemed outdated, and the r/femalfashionadvice thread on Reddit seems to back this sentiment up. However, I actually like it, so I guess I’ll just be outdated 😅
Style tip: ignore “rules” and wear whatever you want! Go ahead and match your shoes to your bag. You’re the captain of your own ship :)

Levis 90s jeans
Mads Norgaard Scarf
Baggu Crescent Handbag
Madewell Ballet Flats
I just realized that the 3 outfits above could have also been a jean styling post as I wore the same jeans (still one of my most worn pairs).
Outfit 4
I loved this outfit!! I started off with my memade 2-tone jeans over which I layered my black silk cami with the asymmetrical hem and black cashmere turtleneck (these 2 top layers have been a very reliable combination for me this spring).
I love to scrunch up one side of the sweater and pin it into place for a little more visual interest and to show more of the cami’s lace hem. Plus, I think it looks cool ;)
I added my leopard print shoes because I find the wide leg of these jeans to look more balanced with chunkier shoes (and I’ll accept any excuse to get another wear out of these before it’s too hot).
Style tip: use a brooch to pin a scrunched area into place for a more interesting shape.
And for a pop of color, I added this bright red tote bag with pink lettering.

Outfit 5
I struggle on really hot days to put together an outfit that feels stylish when I can’t add extra layers to make basic items more interesting. But my goal this summer is to figure that out and I think this next outfit is a step in the right direction:
I started off with my favorite ivory t-shirt, to which I added my tear-away track pants (lots of ventilation). I like how the stripes down the side of the leg match the color of the t-shirt and I also like that I can undo the bottom snaps of the pant legs to make them wider.
Logically, my cream suede sneakers make the most sense and keeps with the “sporty” vibe of the outfit, but I’m partial to wearing these brown ballet flats with my sportier pants. I keep reading about “tension” in outfits and I think that this pairing would fall under the definition of this.
Then I relied on accessories for some extra visual interest:
a silk bandana at the neck in the same color as the shoes - I think this is a good “bookend” moment.
fun silver accessories (earrings, rings, bracelets)
a pop of color with a red handbag - this is actually my daughter’s handbag that I technically bought for the “both of us” :)
Style tip: when you can’t use layering for visual interest, rely on accessories and keep adding until it feels right!
I don’t usual’y consider my water bottle to be an accessory but I think it fit the bill perfectly on this day!
Outfit details:
Orejas hemp/cotton t-shirt (such a good fabric combo)
Vintage Athletic Works Track Pants*
Madewell Ballet Flats
Ozma of California Silk Bandana
Kate Spade Handbag
Mostly old and preloved jewelry
Evening Outfits
We had 2 special occasions that I could get dressed up for over the past month: a family birthday dinner and a show.
This is what I wore.
Outfit 1
This is what I wore to go out for a family birthday dinner, where the request was sushi. I always want to wear a pair of looser, elastic waist pants when I go out to dinner and so I planned my outfit around my black textured wide leg pants. I didn’t want to wear a jacket and I knew that a cashmere sweater would be enough to keep me warm on this particular evening.
But, since it’s spring, I also knew that I wanted a lighter element in the outfit so I added in my blush tank top with a sheer frill at the bottom to peek out under the sweater. Not enough of the frilly hem was visible so I used my brooch to scrunch the sweater hem up.
Style tip: break up an all-black outfit with a peek of a lighter-colored clothing item.
Black moto boots with silver details and my favorite black handbag were the perfect compliments to the rest of the outfit.
It might be a little “dark” for spring, but I love it, and I felt really great and stylish wearing this which is the most important thing.

Outfit 2
At it again with another black outfit but it’s what I always defer to when I want to feel fancy. Plus, I usually wait long enough to start getting ready that I don’t have a lot of time to get dressed and I know that these items work well together.
On this night, my daughter and I were going to the theatre. A family friend offered us their tickets when something came up for them and they wouldn’t be able to attend. Normally, my husband would be my date but he was out of town. We’d gone to shows together as a family before but this was the first time that my daughter and I had gone alone together. We enjoyed getting dressed up and we had a great evening out!
I defaulted to the same black wide-legged pants as the first outfit, but this time I added my black silk cami with the asymmetrical hem and my silk back blazer.
I kept the jewelry simple (and silver) with a long chain that I fastened into a lariat and a couple of old bracelets. I also wore earrings but they weren’t very visible under my hair :)
I actually decluttered this necklace, but my daughter pulled it out of the pile and claimed it, so here I am borrowing it from her!
Style tip: hold the sleeves of silky items (blazers, blouses) up with hair elastics.
I also went with the same moto boots and handbag as the first outfit. The boots are comfortable for walking and the handbag is the perfect size to carry everything that I need. I also love that I don’t have to think about them - I just know they’ll look good.

Thank you so much for reading 💕

Ooh, what a bunch of lovely outfits, Gillian! 💕 I really liked 3 and 5, although I also thought the belt + necklace was brilliant (don’t declutter the belt—accessories are always worth hanging onto!).
Your dressy outfits were also excellent and chic! The ruffled lace peeking out and all your silver jewelry is just so beautiful. You really suit it!
Also who cares if your shoes match? In my experience, people LOVE it when I have anything matchy on!🤘
I have so many wonderful memories of going to the theatre with my mom. I’m glad you had a mom-daughter outing.♥️
Silver jewellery looks amazing on you! Love the blue cardigan and necklace belt outfit. Isn’t it lovely packing away the heavy winter boots and looking forward to seeing them in a few months. I so enjoying packing away the seasonal clothing and thanking them for a good season.
