Sewing Daydreams - A Pant Set and a Skirt
Sharing the inspiration + the patterns and materials I would use
The really great thing about doing a no buy year, followed by a low buy year (there are honestly so many), is that without the constant mental noise around shopping - looking for the perfect item, worrying about the expense or if it will fit, trying to figure out how to wear it, etc. - I’ve been able to focus on which items in my wardrobe I truly love to wear and which ones feel the most like “me”.
So, instead of adding items to my wardrobe in an attempt to figure out my personal style, which is what I used to do, turns out that not adding items has been the thing that has made me more clear than ever on what my actual personal style is:
Most of the items I like to wear are casual, classic and minimalist.
I don’t like to wear a lot of jewelry, usually opting for a pair of earrings and maybe an extra ring to add to my wedding and school rings that I wear everyday.
I prefer to wear neutrals of black, white, grey or cream most days, but enjoy a pop of red, blue or green. I’d like to add some chocolate brown to the mix.
My favorite materials are cotton, silk (preferably raw - the texture is so good) and wool. I’d like to add some linen pieces.
I like the fit of my clothes to be tailored, but a little on the looser side.
As I’ve been honing in on what I like, I’ve been thinking about which brands align with my style and as a result, I’ve rediscovered an old favorite brand that I first became aware of around 2018/19. I never did own anything from this brand as it’s a bit pricier, and while not as pricey as The Row, it does remind me of their pieces.
I also really enjoy how they style their pieces - it’s great inspiration!
The Daydream Inspiration
After looking through the St. Agni website recently, there were definitely a few items that I loved. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about a some of the items and how nice something similar would be in my wardrobe.
For example, this vest/trousers combo:
Even on sale, this set would cost me $708 😭, which got me to thinking, could I make this?
Which led to on a hunt for patterns that are similar to these items.
How I’d Make It
My first stop was one of my favorite pattern shops - Puff and Pencil. While I’ve never actually ordered a pattern (because I haven’t been sewing), I just love the look of their clothing - very casual, classic and minimalist!
For the vest, I’d go with the Waistcoat Vest (XXS-XXL). It has a very similar shape and one could alter the hemline and make the shoulders a little wider to get even closer.
One of the things I really like about the St. Angi vest it that it looks like it has fabric covered snaps as opposed to buttons, which is a design detail that I really like because I hate making button holes! This feature also gives the vest a more streamlined, minimalist look.
I wonder how hard it is to cover snaps?
Now, for the trousers, I’m thinking that the V1910 pattern (XS-XXL) from Simplicity is very close in terms of the crossover pleats:
And here’s a similar elastic waist version (S3105) (XS-XXL), also from Simplicity:
While the pleating is lower on these, I also really like the look of The Juno Trouser (UK 6-28) by Merchant and Mills:
As for the fabric, the original set is made from 65% organic cotton / 45% linen and since I love a cotton/linen blend, that’s what I went looking for. The closest that I found on Stone Mountain & Daughter was 55% linen / 45% cotton, so pretty close. I could keep the color similar to the original with “PFD white”, or I could go grey with this “shale” color:

Will I make either of these? Who knows. Probably not. But a girl can daydream.
What I’ll Probably Make & How
Here’s another thing that I found that I loved and think I would most definitely make - the Silk Wrap Tie Skirt:
I think the Strap Wrap Skirt (XXS-XXL) from Puff and Pencil would be perfect for this one:
It already has an extra long tie, which I probably wouldn’t ever wrap around my waist, but it’s nice to have more styling options.
The original skirt is made from 100% silk crepe. I think this would be amazing in chocolate brown, and this silk crepe would be delicious (no pun intended 😆), or maybe 100% linen:

This Japanese Washed Linen/Cotton blend in “Swamp” would also be really nice, and probably a better fabric choice than silk crepe for my lifestyle:
But I have some denim fabric in my stash that I might try this with first before ordering any other fabric. It’s 2 different tones of denim so maybe I could make it reversible! That’d be fun!
I hope that you enjoyed this little daydream moment with me. I really loved putting this together and thinking about the possibility of sewing again, which will eventually happen!
However, I’m not pressuring myself to make anything until I really want to, but it’ll be nice to have some plans in place when I do.
I’d love to get your opinion on the trousers pattern:
How about the material for the skirt…
As always, thanks so much for being here and for your support - it means so much! I hope you have a great week 🫶🏻
If you know of someone who would enjoy this newsletter, please share it with them!
I love that you’re investigating making these instead of buying, Gillian!💕 I voted for the pink pants because they are so MEEEEE, but I think the last pair is more you. The olive green would look fabulous on you!
I've used Merchant and Mills patterns in the past and I love their offerings. I can't wait to see what you make!
